How to refinish the porcelain in my claw foot tub?

Something ate the porcelain finish off the inside of my tub in several spots. I would like to repair it but don’t know how to go about it.

Well Joyce, We have a clawfoot tub also. The porcelin has gotten to be in pretty bad shape so I was going to use a kit to repaint it. I purchased a kit at Home Depot and when the wife was gone a few weeks ago, I was determined to go at it.

I read the instructions and started the prework, cleaning three times etc. etc. Then one night I saw on this very web site where a gentleman asked the question if anyone had worked with this very product I was about to apply. It is Magic ReNew. I linked to the question he asked below. After reading of his problems, I was skeptical.

I called a couple of professional tub refinishers in my local area and talked with them. One was most helpful. He was aware of the product I was contemplating putting on. He did not try to talk me out of it, but did say, if the tub was already sprayed with this product, he will have to charge an additonal $100 to remove it. He wanted $400 to do his refinishing process.

The kit says you must clean the tub three times with TSP and then use 0000 steel wool before painting. As I was cleaning with the TSP, the tub came out looking much better with just the good cleaning. Not as good as a new spray job, but much better. Mr. Pro also said the kits usually only last 12 to 18 months.

Well, I took the kit back and am considering having Mr. local Pro do our tub. I figured for the extra $100 to remove the kit spray, and then to only get 1 – 1 1/2 years out of the finish before it needed to be done again, it was not worth it.
