How do I recurl my dolls hair?

What can I safely use on my dolls hair to recurl it. This is a collectable porcelain doll.

It depends what the hair is made of. Is it a synthetic hair, human hair, or mohair? How big or small do you want the curls to be? How old is the doll? (the age of the doll does make a difference….dolls from before 1980 have hair that is more sensitive to heat). There are many methods to recurl a dolls hair, and heat setting is NOT always a BAD thing (but TOO much heat would be, although I know people who give dolls very-hot-water-perms safely). I would recommend just the basics without knowing all of the facts about your doll. You can use foam rollers, perm rollers, or even drinking straws cut to the right length and secured with bobby pins or pins. Dampen the hair and set it in the rollers in the style you want. Perm end papers can be used to cover the ends of the hair and make curling easier and more even (keeping the ends of the hair straighter and preventing that fried funny look it can get if rolled improperly). With certain hair types, a bit of watered down gel can be used to dampen the hair, or, after it is set, spray with a *small* amount of hair spray. I like using a a HOODED hair dryer on low to shorten dry time and help heat set the curl. I have used it on many hair types and different age dolls safely many many times. If the doll has bangs, you may want to cover the head with a piece of nylon stocking to hold down the bands before drying. Allow doll to sit for several days until hair is completely dry (I don’t usually fully dry the hair under the hooded dryer….just about 20-30 minutes on low, followed by air drying). When you remove the rollers, use your fingers to pull the curls looser and finger-style the hair into place. You may need to dampen your fingers lightly before touching an area that needs to lay a bit flatter. I hope that is helpful to you.
