Foot-on-floor, or push-powered, ride on toys provide the stability and slower speeds that are perfect for toddlers just learning to walk. Generally suited for young children from about 12 to 18 months through to 3 years, there are some notable exceptions including balance bikes and scooters that are enjoyed by older children.
It is recommended that toddlers be walking before they begin playing with ride-on toys, however there are some, such as the Playskool Step Star Walk N Ride, that function as a walking aid and then later ride-on toys. This brightly coloured toy, is geared towards tots from 9 months onwards, converts to a foot-on-floor ride-on once the child can walk.
The most basic of the foot-on-floor ride-ons, and those suited to the youngest toddlers, are very low to the ground, have close-set wheels, and are easy to get on and off. Examples of sturdy little ride on to include the purple Little Tikes Sit N Roll Horse with bright green wheels, or the small Ladybird Wheely Bug, featuring a rounded body and easy to grasp curved handlebar.
For slightly older toddlers, or those walking well, a push-powered trike might be more what they would enjoy. A nice basic trike is the Little Tikes Mini Cycle. With three longer spindly looking, yet very stable, legs, the Scuttlebug keeps all of its buggy good looks without sacrificing stability.
One of the most enduring foot-on-floor toys is the Little Tikes Cozy Coupe, which has been around for 30 years! The Cozy Coupe along with the Police Patrol and Grand Coupe is a wonderful ride-on suitable for children from 18 months to 5 years old. They feature moulded plastic with rounded corners and roofs, functioning doors, and roomy interiors.
For children from 3 or 4 years of age, and looking for more of a challenge, run bikes will provide just that! These two-wheeled bikes have no pedals, are powered solely by little running legs and are the perfect transition for children moving towards a proper pedal-bike. Available in both wood and metal, classic run bikes are a wonderful toy for children, and it is not uncommon for children having learned to balance on a run bike to be faster at learning to ride a pedal bike. The Hoppop Motta bike is a good example of this ingenious toy.
Finally, scooters also belong in the foot-on-floor category and have perhaps the largest age range. Scooters can be used by children aged 3 or 4 and can still be enjoyed at age 10. A good transition model that provides a bit more stability is the Mini Micro T-bar Scooter. This fun little scooter has three wheels, two in front and one in the back, making it far more stable for younger children to ride.
