How do you distinguish between the real and the unreal?
My little sister got sent her first chain text. It was a pretty standard story, with her getting violently killed if she didn’t send it to 10 other friends. It really freaked her out. Then we watched an episode of Monk about voodoo dolls and that made her even more freaked out.
My parents (Christians) and I (atheist) have tried to tell her that it is all fake and that she shouldn’t be scared. It got me thinking about why my parents, and deists and theists in general, pick to have faith in some things but not others.
So my question is, how do you distinguish between what you believe and what you don’t?
I think it’s a matter of perspective. Here’s an example, using your chain letter story. I’ll use me in place of your sister. Let’s say you and I were friends and I was telling you how I got a chain letter saying I’d die if I didn’t send it to 10 people. Obviously we both know it’s a load of crap. Now let’s say the next day I got hit by a bus and died. That chain letter would be the first thing you thought of!
To some people (myself included), this would be coincidence. Other people might take chain letters more seriously. The point is, I think it just depends how dependent on results people are. It’s hard to explain, so I hope my example was decent.
