Tips For Starting a Dollhouse Collection
Getting started with a dollhouse collection may appear somewhat overwhelming at first. There are certainly many items out there as well as websites for collectors of dolls and dollhouses. But don’t be put off by the swarm of information. Instead, make the most of it as a newcomer to dollhouse collectibles. Half of the fun that comes with beginning a new hobby is gathering everything that you need to get started. Starting a dollhouse collection begins with the very first item that you purchase. From there, it just keeps getting bigger and better.
The first thing you should do when you make the choice to collect dolls and dollhouses is to abandon the notion that it is something just for children. There is no rule that states dollhouses can only be enjoyed by kids. There are thousands of avid doll collectors out there that share your interest and passion for dollhouses. It is a sad misconception that dolls are just for kids. Embrace the youth within and toss that idea out the window.
You will have to start thinking about the type of dollhouse that you would like. You may wish to start off with something smaller and simple. Dollhouses come in many shapes and sizes. Don’t feel as though you need to start off with a Victorian mansion. A small, cozy dollhouse is perfect for getting started. You can always upgrade later to something more elaborate.
After choosing a dollhouse you will have to decide if there is a certain era or time period that you want to display in your house. Many people enjoy recreating scenes from days long passed. Perhaps you want to decorate your house with a certain theme or style. Keep some notes on your brainstorming and ideas. They will be a valuable reference point when it comes time to make some purchases.
You can use your dollhouse to recreate a certain moment in time or even a scene from your favourite movie. Perhaps you would like to use your dollhouse display to tell a story. Whatever you plan to do, don’t feel as if it isn’t right for a dollhouse. It is a creative outlet for you to shine through. There is something truly special about making it a personal creation.
If you are as new as they come to the world of dollhouse collecting, take some time to do a little research. Look back on the history of the hobby and how it all began. You can also find museums that have more information on old dollhouses as well as antique ones that can often be viewed by the public.
Shop around online before you make purchases. You may be able to find some great deals with a little investigating. Join a dollhouse group or forum online for added tips on manufacturers and price ranges. Local neighbourhood craft shops may also have some dollhouse related items. If you are especially daring and creative, you can even design and build your own dollhouse for a really original look. Starting a dollhouse collection is easy and only requires time and joy.
