White Girl getting black doll?

I had a family member call me today and ask me if it was okay to get my white daughter a black doll. The baby doll she wanted to get her only had a black baby in that model. I said I preferred a white doll for her, but wasn’t totally opposed to her getting a black doll. After I got off the phone, I was wondering “why do I feel this way?” My mother said it was probably because little girls baby dolls are their “babies” and typically white girls have white babies, and black girls have black babies. I’m sure a majority of black mothers would get their black toddlers a black baby doll. With all this fear of being racist, I still feel kind of weird. I never even thought about how I would feel about my daughter receiving a black baby doll. What is your input?

Here’s the sneaky thing we all don’t like to talk about: all of us, even though most of us are civilized and never act on it, have some level of bias towards our own race. We’re all just a tiny bit racist, but we choose to be decent people and disregard race, most of the time.

Playing with a baby of a different race is a GOOD thing for your daughter, as much as it would be for a black baby. Think of an opportunity for you- and she- to grow to be more accepting, less biased people.
