Beggining apron patterns?
I have been wanting to sew a cute apron for myself for a really long time, but I have no idea how… I’m just a begginer so I have been looking for a begginers apron pattern everywhere, but I cannot seem to find one. Does anyone know?
Try cutting a pattern will a large piece of tissue type paper (thin enough that it will be flexible but strong enough to be pinned to fabric). Draw the pattern out first so that you can get it to the size and shape you like. Use cotton type fabric.
Cut the fabric remembering to leave 1/2 inch for your seams all the way round. Use an iron and pins to fold 1/4 inch seam and then fold over again 1/4 inch to hide the rough edges. When you get to the corner, cut the corner off so that the seams will not be bulky. Cut just a little short of the visible edge. Sew the seams first with a very long tacking stitch (that way if it goes wrong you can unpick it and redo it). Then use a fine stitch (or sewing machine) to finish. When you are happy with the stitches, you can unpick the tacking. If you aren’t confident at all with sewing, you could try wonderweb which will stick the hems together but this may make the seams rather stiff and not hang right.
The toughest bit will be around any curves in your pattern but if you make 1/4 inch niks into the seam fabric, every 5 inches or so (more often if it is a tight curve), the fabric will be much easier to manage.
Rather than trying to be too fussy, why not try using thick ribbons instead of making the ties and neck bit? You could find a complimentary colour to jazz it up.
For sewing you really need the following basic items:
1. A REALLY sharp pair of scissors
2. An iron and ironing board
3. pins and good needles
4. a large flat surface to lay your fabric out on.
5. measuring tape (if you are following patterns or making something from scratch).
When you buy thread, make sure you buy cotton for cotton materials and man made for man made fabrics. If you use cotton thread with a man made fabric, the thread may shrink when you wash it which will ruin all your hard work.
Look out for a good book with simple techniques and projects and that has illustrations.
I think an apron is a great first project. I started off making napkins but they get very boring!
