Clean vintage trains or leave dusty/dirty ?

I have come into a boatload of HO & O scale trains. The thing is they are pretty dirty & dusty. If there is one thing I have learned from Antiques Roadshow is you are usually better off leaving most things in the condition they are in rather than trying to clean them, thus decreasing/destroying their value(especially if you don’t know what you are doing,like me) Thanks for any help

It would depend on the material of the item. If is it metal or plastic, (Some old trains are wood or cardstock!) they should be able to withstand some minor cleaning with plain water and a paper towel etc as long as it is dabbed and patted dry rather quickly. Do not rub much or vigorously scrub them. If the paint is at least slightly glossy, that will help repel the water while cleaning. Dust and dirt are not a part of their value. Q Tips and a very used soft toothbrush are good cleaning tools. As always try cleaning a spot that is not noticeable first.
